Getting a Psychology Degree

Psychology can be a very interesting subject to people for many reasons. Some people find it fascinating because it has all to do with the human brain, thoughts and emotions. Others like it because they can learn more about different people and why they do what they do, or how to help them with their problems. No matter why you are interested in it, having a degree in psychology can be very rewarding.

Psychology is the science of human behavior and mental processes. Having a degree in this particular field can lead to many different jobs because there are so many different areas for this subject. Someone with this type of major can look forward to becoming a therapist, a criminal analyst, a social worker, and many more careers. If you are hoping to get a degree in psychology, you will probably be in it for the long haul.

Most companies prefer to hire someone with at least a master’s degree or a doctoral degree. However, with a bachelor’s degree, you can still look for jobs in community or public relations, advertising and marketing research, teaching, retail and sales just to name a few. If you do decide to go and get your master’s or doctoral degree, you may want to look at becoming a clinical psychologist, a counselor, or a social worker. Perhaps you would like to work within the education and school system; you could become a school counselor, school psychologist, or an educational psychologist. There are plenty of career options for those with psychology degrees.

Perhaps you don’t want to go into psychology professionally, but still would like to major in that subject. That is always an option since psychology is all about human behaviors and thoughts, it would actually be useful in just about any line of work where you have to interact with other people. Many undergraduates go to get a graduate degree and get an advanced degree in another subject such as business or law. Psychology can be considered as the ultimate stepping stone to other advanced degrees.

When applying for a degree in psychology, you will want to check with the school you want to go to and make sure they have the degree that you want. Some colleges and university only offer undergraduate psychology degrees. If you decide you want to go to graduate school, there are plenty of places that offer master’s and doctoral degrees, even some online colleges offer those programs.

One thing you will need to consider when applying for any degree is will you have time. If you are straight out of high school planning on going to college, it is assumed you have time for this degree. However, if you are full-time parent, or have a full-time job, you can still apply, but you may want to consider an online college. There are many online colleges that are accredited with most of the same degree plans as traditional colleges and universities. Taking your classes online allow you to earn your degree on your time. Also, if you are already working in that particular field, your company may reimburse your tuition.
