What Is ATP Testing?

What is ATP testing? This is a question that goes through the minds of those exploring the world of biochemistry. In simple terms, ATP testing as the name suggests involves the testing of ATP. ATP is an particle found in every living cell and is responsible for providing the energy for different physiological processes. ATP is found both around the nucleoplasm and the cytoplasm in each cell.

An ATP Test is carried out to measure the level of biological concentration and health in different mediums. The test is applied in different situations like testing of drinking water, measuring the level of Sanitation in different equipments and surfaces, managing biological treatment plants, and testing different soils just to mention but a few.

ATP testing is done using a luminometer, which contains an enzyme catalyst luciferase. The enzyme reacts with the ATP to produce light. The level of light produced shows the amount of organisms in a sample, with more light being produced when the level of organism concentration is high. This is what happens in fireflies, where the enzyme catalyst luciferase found naturally in the fireflies bodies produce energy in the form of light, hence the light produced by the fireflies.

ATP Testing is important for a number of reasons. Some of these reasons include:

  1. It is one of the most accurate tests as it detects both anaerobic and aerobic bacteria without being affected by medium compositions and conditions.
  2. The ATP Test is also fast, and the results are known immediately.
  3. The test can be done anywhere without requiring a laboratory, microscope or a technician for that matter. The luminometer is a portable user friendly device, and the reagent enzyme is inbuilt meaning that all any user has to do is put the luminometer in the sample to be tested and wait for the device to portray the results in the form of light.

The importance of the ATP Test in different aspects of life cannot be overstated, especially in the health and natural resource management sector. Food and beverage industries and hospitals conduct this test so often to ensure that the goods and services they provide to the people are up to standards. Waste water firms and water control services also undertake the test to ensure that the water being availed to human beings and animals as well is not only safe, but is also managed in the best way possible.
